Kanye really outdid himself with this silhouette. Bringing his mind to the recent trend of Dad Shoes, Ye’ introduced his 18th Yeezy with Adidas, shocking the public. He continued to surprise his audience with the replacement of the infamous boost technology with AdiPrene and linking it more to the Raf Simons x Adidas “Ozweego” silhouette that was recently popularized. The Yeezy 500 is almost as controversial as its predecessor, the Yeezy 700, in that it’s a shoe unlike anyone has seen in the past.
As abstract of a shoe as the 500 is, certain songs and samples do help to connect Ye’s mind and this shoe. The first of a few that comes up is A$AP Mob’s “Walk On Water” off of the album Cozy Tapes Vol 2: Too Cozy. The visuals for the hit do nothing but clarify the connection. Throughout the video the Mob combines several different elements of design and editing similar to how West put together a shoe with several different key elements that all combine into new levels of difference in a sneaker. While the song has a metaphorical meaning of flying overseas with women, shopping for designer clothes, and living lavishly, interpretations of the lyrics have expanded to members of the mob claiming to be gods of style and being able to literally walk on water. This is similar to Kanye’s high beliefs of himself and him claiming to be the alternative of Jesus himself, granting him similar god-like powers.
A$AP Mob has very similar connections with that of Kanye West himself. With A$AP Rocky being named GQ’s “World’s Flyest Human”, A$AP Ferg being involved with different fashion based shows and interviews, and the rest of the mob standing out stylistically; they definitely make a name for themselves in the world of fashion, much like Kanye. On a musical level they both manage to create their own elements, the Mob bringing different types of foreign knowledge and small audio clips to their songs, and Kanye often brings his emotional cues from his life to the pen and the pad, relating his lifestyle to hip-hop and bringing in foreign knowledge as well.
